Five or six years ago we started visiting several small local wineries in the Northern Virginia area. Gene and I found the wines to be very good and improving every year. In addition, for the most part, the wineries are a great place to just enjoy some wine and relax. Visit The Virginia Wineries web site for a complete listing of all of the wineries. Virginia is currently the fifth largest wine producer in the United States and growing every year with over 100 wineries and many more vineyards in operation as of this writing.

My favorite winery to visit - Linden Vineyards, Linden VA.

Another really nice place with a rustic farm atmosphere is Willowcroft Farm Vineyards in Loudoun County VA.

One of the newer vineyard/wineries in the area and the closest to DC is Chrysalis Vineyards. One of the few (and the largest) growers of the Virginia native grape Norton. They're located in Middleburg, VA.
